Merry chrimbo everyone, hope you all had a great day! Christmas at the lamberts was very good! Possibly the best turkey dinner I’ve ever had, genius!!!
Went to midnight mass on christmas eve for the first time… interesting experience. The church which was a traditional anglican in local Beverley was huge and I was very suprised that it was completely filled, jam packed! The service was very dry and “religious”, dudes in dresses marching round the church in frowns carrying crosses on long sticks, service led from a book (scripted), announcements from the minister with retourts sung from the congregation in the most rediculous melody… literally could not have come up with a more random sequence of notes!
Im not really used to this kind of madness, but it made me a bit angry to be honest… just seemed so staged and almost pharisaical! It was really exciting to see a church completely filled but was soooo frustrating that the people wouldn’t see the life and passion behind the faith, just the stuffy tradition. If the whole service is scripted where is there time for the spirit to move and lead the worship/sermon/etc to where it should be? One argument is that it has to appeal to the folks that only come for that one service a year… but surely thats a load of crap? A nice watered down service so people can feel good about themselves once a year and feel comfortable and fuzzy and warm?!?! how about a nice vibrant life filled service that challanges the people that come, giving them something they have never had before… sitting in the service its no wonder that people dont see christianity as relavent in todays culture, its time to seperate the tradition (which dont get me wrong is all good, but not for everyone) from the true faith.
Jesus came to build a way for humanity to get back to God, so that we might have a personal relationship with him and to save us from the law, so lets not get bogged down with crazy ceromonies and lose sight of Jesus!
Rant over, merry christmas one and all
P.S. Think the reason this frustrated me so much is that I know there is life in the church in question, it has the most amazing youth group, which just keeps on growing and growing… just would have been amazing to see all the people in church on xmas eve walking out with a desire to know God!
